Chesterfield v Middlesborough (FA CUP SEMI FINAL 1997)
Chesterfield 3-3 Middlesbrough, Old Trafford, 1997Chesterfield were on the verge of completing one of the greatest runs in FA Cup history. The third division side were 2-0 up against Bryan Robson's Middlesbrough before Fabrizio Ravanelli and Craig Hignett hit back. In the end Chesterfield needed a last-minute extra time equaliser to force a replay but the tie was controversial. Referee David Elleray ruled out a perfectly good goal from Jonathan Howard that could have seen the underdogs reach the final. With Chesterfield leading 2-1, the ball clearly crossed the line after crashing off the under side of the bar - but nothing was given. In the replay, Middlesbrough won 3-0 to bring the fairytale to an end.
